John Shepherd is a Senior Managing Director at Accordion, based in Houston. John has spent over 30 years in turnaround and restructuring, energy private equity, corporate finance, and M&A advisory. John’s experience as an investor and advisor has spanned the full spectrum of conventional and renewable energy. Recent representative engagements include:
- Financial Advisor to the equity sponsor in a restructuring of a portfolio of wind and solar projects in TX and CA
- Financial Advisor to a restructuring of a retail and C&I electric provider operating in 10 states
- CRO and Board Member in a CH. 11 restructuring of a portfolio of utility and community scale solar projects in the NE US
- Financial Advisor to the secured lenders to a RNG facility in a Ch. 11 and 363 sales process
- Financial Advisor to the creditors in a Ch. 11 process for a natural gas and helium operator in UT
- CRO and interim CEO for a natural gas and helium business in the US Midcontinent
- Financial Advisor to a biomass-to-fuels technology company, managing a dual distressed recap and sale process
- Independent Manager to multiple oil & gas and solar ABS issuers
Prior to joining Accordion, John led the energy and renewables turnaround and restructuring practice at Ankura, as well as having responsibility for industrial and services companies in Texas. Prior to Ankura, he spent fifteen years in private equity and the energy industry, with ten of those years at GE Capital (GEC) as Managing Director, where he co-managed equity investing in energy infrastructure in North America. While at GEC, his team invested over $4 billion through equity, preferred and debt investments in energy infrastructure companies and projects.
Following GEC, John co-founded Strata Energy Investments, backed by Reservoir Capital, with a mandate to invest equity and preferred capital in energy midstream businesses and projects. He also co-founded Intregris Energy Partners, backed by private equity, to invest in distressed oil and gas upstream and midstream assets.
He also spent time in the energy industry as SVP of infrastructure at Select Energy Services, where he was responsible for water infrastructure strategy and implementation and business development, as CFO of Summit Terminaling Services LLC, a private equity-backed marine terminaling business, and CEO of Texas Water Solutions, LLC, a private equity-backed water infrastructure business focused on water recycling in the Permian Basin.
Prior to his time in private equity, John spent eleven years at Morgan Stanley as an investment banker, where he advised energy, industrial and services clients on corporate finance and M&A. John started the MLP practice at Morgan Stanley.
He has been a board director of Howard Energy Partners, Phoenix Park Gas Processors, SourceGas, Eagle LNG, Harvest Pipeline, Tenawa Resource Management and OYA Renewables.
