Michael Nowlan

Michael is a Senior Managing Director with over 25 years of strategic, financial, and turnaround & restructuring advisory experience. He has served in numerous C-level interim management roles including CEO, CFO and CRO, where he has provided strategic, financial and operational guidance and has helped stabilize and recapitalize many companies during challenging and changing economic and business scenarios.

Michael has served as Senior Managing Director and Senior VP for several leading restructuring firms. He has extensive experience leading distressed and/or underperforming global, middle-market, and large-sized companies through business transformations across a wide range of industries including retail, distribution, service, consumer products, industrial products, high-tech manufacturing, and healthcare/life sciences.

As interim CEO/CFO, Michael led a privately held jewelry retailer through a liquidity crisis by stabilizing operations, developing strategic options for the board of directors and spearheading a sales process that preserved go-forward business and provided a return to the company’s guarantor. He also led the strategic and business plan development for a $700M regional grocery chain that influenced the client to divest in a series of transactions that optimized the value of the company, providing a return on equity to shareholders.

As acting CEO and CFO, Michael led the strategic assessment and implementation of an orderly divestiture of a $70M dry cleaning chain with operations in six states. In addition to improving cost and operational structures, he managed the closing of 12 transactions within a 60-day period, preserving 90% of the employee base and alleviating the need for equity to infuse additional capital.

Michael served as CRO of an affiliation of companies in the healthcare and high-tech materials industries for an equity stakeholder, driving improved budgeting and forecasting, and increased cash flow and streamlining that helped enable the companies to extend their runway leading to potential liquidity events.

He also served as Co-CRO for a mid-market life-science company, helping implement financial and operational discipline with clear metrics and processes to improve liquidity and position the company for a successful sale of assets through Chapter 11.

As the Senior VP for a national Restructuring firm, Michael provided strategic, financial and operational advisory services and team leadership in many complex client restructurings for both debtor and creditor stakeholders including Budget Rental Car, Sunterra Corporation, MCI/WorldCom, and Malden Mills Industries.

At the request of an early growth stage company, Michael joined the board as an independent member, providing advisory and guidance to the CEO and Board in raising capital and developing strategic business plans while working with the CFO on improving financial reporting, analysis, and budgeting/financial planning. Additionally, he currently serves as a Steering Committee member for the Conservation Council of the Trustees of Reservations.

Michael earned an M.B.A. in Finance & Entrepreneurship from the F. W. Olin School of Business at Babson College and a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from Bentley College in Waltham, MA. He is a member of the Turnaround Management Association and the Association for Corporate Growth.
